WE TEACH SKILLS THAT SAVES LIVES

The Salina Family YMCA conducts American Red Cross Lifeguard Training courses, including Water Park and Water Front Skills modules. These courses provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.

The basic Lifeguard Training course is approximately 25 hours, 20 minutes, with an additional 3 hours, 40 minutes for the Water Park skills module.

This Water Park Skills module teaches lifeguards the skills and knowledge to prevent and respond to emergencies in aquatic facilities with water park features such as water slides, lazy rivers, and wave pools. Lifeguards working at non-surf open water areas such as those found at public parks, resorts, summer camps, and campgrounds may need to add a 5 hour, 40 minute

Water Front Skills module to equip them with the extra training and knowledge needed for that environment. Training options are also available for Blended Learning, with participants completing online material prior to the start of classes, lessening the amount of time spent in the classroom, and maximizing practice time and hands-on learning. Class length is shorter and varies depending on the course chosen and the size of the class.

Water Safety Instructor course trains and certifies instructor candidates to instruct swimming lessons, and includes information on class management, higher-level swim skills, hydrodynamics, stroke mechanics, and water safety.
