Yoga classes are FREE for Y members! Millions of people do yoga because they love what it does for the mind, body, and spirit. An exercise discipline that dates back to ancient India, yoga involves moving the body through a series of positions and stretches, while focusing on breathing or specific thoughts. The practice delivers unique and vital benefits, which include increased energy levels, lower blood pressure, improved memory, better balance and sense of calm.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha is a slow-paced stretching class with some simple breathing exercises and seated meditation. This is a good place to learn basic poses, relaxation techniques and become comfortable with yoga. People who have practiced Hatha Yoga have experienced an improved sense of health and well being, feeling more at peace with themselves and in increased inner awareness. The most  familiar and  popular aspect of yoga in the West is Hatha Yoga, which refers to the physical postures and movements of the body, however this is just one branch of the giant tree of Yoga philosophy. Hatha Yoga may be practiced by people of any age or physical condition. Many people who have tried a hatha class love the relaxed feeling.

Fitness Yoga

A typical class includes standing poses, twists, core work, balancing poses, forward bends, back-bends, inversions and restorative poses.  All postures combine flexibility, strength, and balance to work the entire body. This class lets your body be your guide. No single pose is required and modifications are available for every pose letting you determine when you’re more flexible or ready for more challenging poses.

Power Yoga

This vigorous yoga practice explores advanced poses while keeping a focus on developing stamina and flexibility. This class emphasizes mobility, strength and range of motion through strong dynamic flowing movements. Poses flow from one to another in conjunction with breath developing core power and challenging the body and mind. Modifications are given for those who are just beginning their yoga journey.

Veterans Yoga

In November 2013, Melanie Black (Yoga Instructor) offered a Free Yoga class once a week for any Veteran who would like to participate. When asked why she was offering free classes for Veterans, she explained how much she appreciated what all Veterans had and are currently doing for this Great Nation in which we live because her father and grandfather were both Veterans. Volunteering her time to help Veterans improve their life was her way of showing that appreciation.

It’s the not-so-secret weapon of both Hollywood stars and busy moms, and the best part is that it’s appropriate for all ages and fitness levels. Anyone can do Pilates and see the benefits in a short amount of time.

When you practice Pilates, you build strength and stability – especially in your abdominals, legs and back, improve your flexibility and reduce your risk of injury. Pilates is also great for rehabilitation after an injury.

Our Ys offer a variety of classes including mat and reformer programs. They are led by certified trainers, who are skilled at designing workouts to meet your individual goals. The focus is on developing better posture, body control and proper breathing, while also reducing tension and strengthening your body.
