Lifeguard Training

ARC (American Red Cross) Lifeguard Training Class

The Salina Family YMCA conducts American Red Cross Lifeguard Training courses, including Water Park and Water Front Skills modules. These courses provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. The basic Lifeguard Training course is approximately 25 hours, 20 minutes, with an additional 3 hours, 40 minutes for the Water Park skills module. This Water Park Skills module teaches lifeguards the skills and knowledge to prevent and respond to emergencies in aquatic facilities with water park features such as water slides, lazy rivers, and wave pools. Lifeguards working at non-surf open water areas such as those found at public parks, resorts, summer camps, and campgrounds may need to add a 5 hour, 40 minute Water Front Skills module to equip them with the extra training and knowledge needed for that environment. Training options are also available for Blended Learning, with participants completing online material prior to the start of classes, lessening the amount of time spent in the classroom and maximizing practice time and hands on learning. Class length is shorter and varies depending on the course chosen and the size of the class.

Course Prerequisites:

  • Participants must be 15 before the final scheduled session of the course.
  • A pre-course swim test will be conducted the first day of class – lifeguard candidates must be strong swimmers. All skills must be completed in good form to remain in the class.

Swim Test Prerequisites:

  • Swim 300m continuously, face in the water, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing, using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using onlyl the legs. Candidates should place their hands under their armpits.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds: Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 10 ft. to retrieve a 10-pound brick. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to the starting point with both hands continually holding the brick and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance underwater. Exit the water without using a ladder in 1:40.

Certification Requirements:

  • Attend and participate in all class sessions.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required final rescue skill scenarios.
  • Pass both the Section 1—CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid and Section 2—Lifeguarding Skills final written exams with minimum grades of 80 percent.

Candidates successfully completing the course will receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED valid for 2 years.
